Who's creating your future?

I want you to tell me it's you.  Not me, your boss or someone close to you.  Not your circumstances or the plight of the world.

Sure, all these people and things do have a part to play in your future.  But responsibility for your future is yours and depends on how you think about it, prepare for it and react to it.

We blame other people or circumstances.  But it comes down to the choices we make.

There's an age-old debate about creativity - are some people creative and others not?  I think it's pretty clear that everyone was born creative.  And that's what I tell people when they ask.

Just watch your kids playing and you'll see the natural instincts of creativity working away.  They experiment.  Ask questions.  They don't prejudice people and they don't get all negative.

Life beats the creativity out of us

But life beats that out of us.  Some kids are told by their parents to stop asking so many questions.  Peer pressure in the school yard slowly beats out of us any desire to be different, unique or creative.

In the office, new ideas aren't considered as good as the trendy ideas that the boss likes.  We all know that bucking the trend is a career risk.  Except in some organizations where innovation truly is encouraged.

The problem is, when we give in to the fight against our creative instincts, we abdicate the decision for who is going to create our future to other people.  When we have the choice to create it ourselves.

Every decision counts

My philosophy is that every decision we make counts.  And every decision can be pivotal as we create our future.  Jonathan Halls and Associates is about looking to the future and helping you communicate more powerfully and become more innovative at work and in your personal life.

It would be my privilege if we are to meet some day in a seminar room or at a conference.  And I'd love you to tell me that you're creating your future - you haven't passed that on to someone else.

If you or your organization wants to unleash the creative juices and need help, let me know.  I or one of my associates may be able to help peel back the layers so you and your organization can re-discover your true creative self.
